Description
How did the prisoners of war of the First World War in the Habsburg Empire actually fare? How was and is the fate of the prisoners illuminated in historiography? This volume brings together new research findings and deals with central questions on the subject. The fate of the soldiers who were taken prisoner by the Imperial and Royal Army in the course of the First World War is a reflection of the history of the country. The fate of the soldiers taken prisoner by the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War reflects the drama of the last years of the Habsburg Empire in many ways.
Different responsibilities in the prisoner-of-war system of the Danube Monarchy led to a struggle for compliance with obligations under international law towards the enemy soldiers as well as to their merciless exploitation. Tens of thousands died, hundreds of thousands were part of a ramified system of organised forced labour until the end of the war. To this day, the fate of the prisoners in their countries of origin is often given little attention or fitted into national narratives of the First World War. This volume deals with the respective country-specific historiographies and also examines the question of which priorities the Habsburg Empire followed in the treatment of prisoners of war. Against this background, current studies are combined with a repositioning of the topic in international prisoner of war research.
