When the Habsburg Monarchy collapsed in the autumn of 1918, it also buried under its ruins the army of Prince Eugene, Archduke Karl and Radetzky, which until then had fought for almost exactly 300 years in all the countries of Europe. Fritz Weber experienced the last campaign against Italy from 1915 to 1918 as a young officer in the Imperial and Royal Army. Army. His historical account not only traces the events of the war on the Dolomite and Karst fronts, but also conveys a comprehensive atmospheric picture of the time of the downfall of the monarchy and the old-style army.
The final battle of the Austro-German, Hungarian, Slovenian and Croatian troops on the Isonzo and Piave rivers, as well as the retreat of this multi-ethnic army through the old territories of the empire, which had all at once become hostile countries, are depicted by Weber in all their tragic violence. Probably no other author has portrayed the drama of the wrestling of nations and the collapse of the empire so authentically and vividly. More than 60 years after its last publication, this essential eye-witness account from the mountain front of the First World War is here made accessible again for the first time.
