Developed in the spring of 1934 as a Volkswagen with room for a family of four, with an air-cooled engine to protect against freezing in winter, economical with a maximum of 7 litres of petrol per 100 km, capable of maintaining a speed of 100 km/h, and all this at a price of no more than 1000 RM. As early as 1934, the Reich Ministry of Transport realised that this was exactly what the military needed, and so they set about converting it for use by the Reichswehr. Thus, the most diverse variants of the Kübel and Schwimmwagen were created, which became a permanent part of all troops.
