Thickener, suitable for: TFC Silicone rubber type 1 TFC Silicone rubber type 2 TFC Silicone rubber type 3
This can be used to mix a liquid silicone into a brushable or trowelable silicone. Silicones can thus be applied to vertical surfaces such as walls, ceilings, furniture or decorations without silicone running down or dripping. Larger objects can also be moulded with silicone layers using the brush method and provided with a support jacket instead of making a full silicone cast.
The thixothropic agent can be used for addition-curing and condensation-curing silicone.
It is, however, NOT suitable as an additive for food-grade silicones - as a result, the food-grade silicones generally lose their tested approval for use with foodstuffs.
Processing:
The addition is 1% to a maximum of 3% by weight.
For silicones with the same mixing ratio, add half the amount of thixothropic agent to component A and half the amount to component B BEFORE mixing both components A and B and check the viscosity of the two components. If the viscosity of both components is as desired, then mix both components according to the processing instructions of the silicone.
If it is a condensation-curing silicone (usually recognisable by a mixing ratio not equal to 1:1), add the thixothropic agent only to the silicone component. Once the desired viscosity has been reached, add the crosslinker component.
Coating procedure
If you wish to apply several layers in succession, it is important that the silicone layer applied first has not yet fully cured. Apply the subsequent layer when the previous layer is still tacky. This is the only way to achieve a complete bond between the two layers.
