The armies of the Frankish and Norman princes of about 80,000 formed the first crusade of the knights. The Eastern Roman King Alexios supplied the army with food and ferried them to Asia Minor. There they achieved their first successes against the Muslims and continued on their way. Their first major success was the conquest of the city of Edessa. Edessa became the first Crusader state, followed by Antioch. Here a dispute arose between the Crusader leaders, and Bohemond of Taranto founded the second Crusader state in Antioch. The Crusader army was now considerably depleted. The reduced Crusader army marched on and finally reached Jerusalem on 07.06.1099. After a long siege and heavy losses, they were finally able to take Jerusalem on 15 July 1099.
