Berek Joselewicz, son of Joselewicz, (born 1764 in Kretinga, Grand Duchy of Lithuania; died 5 May 1809 in Kock near Lublin) was a Jewish colonel in the Polish army who raised a Jewish cavalry unit in 1794 and commanded it in the Kosciuszko Uprising against Russian troops. He fell at the head of a squadron of the army of the Duchy of Warsaw in the Battle of Kock against Austria in 1809.
The Battle of Kock (near Lublin in Poland) on 5 May 1809 between the Polish and Austrian armies ended in an Austrian victory.
Berek Joselewicz (17 September 1764 15 May 1809) was a Polish merchant of Jewish heritage and a colonel of the Polish Army during the Kosciuszko Uprising. Joselewicz commanded the first Jewish military formation in modern history excluding Prince Potemkin's Israelovsky.
