For several decades, the missile artillery of the German Armed Forces was dominated by American-made nuclear battlefield weapons. Only when equipped with the 110 mm SF rocket launcher did the artillery troops introduce a conventional area fire weapon. This light artillery rocket system (Lars 1) on a 7 t gl (6x6) KHD Jupiter truck proved itself in troop service, so that from 1981 onwards, after the introduction of the vehicle follow-up generation, Lars 1 was modernised and converted to the chassis of the MAN 7 t mil gl (6x6) KAT I truck. Introduced in 1990, the Mars Medium Artillery Rocket System (MLRS) replaced the Lars 2. Mars is still in active service today and is soon due for modernisation, so it will continue to form the backbone of German rocket artillery units in the future.
