The history of modern armoured vehicle construction hardly knows a more successful armoured vehicle than the American M113 armoured personnel carrier. The German Army also procured this successful vehicle from 1962 onwards. At the time of the Cold War, about 4000 M113s were in the Army's inventory, including numerous special vehicles. In the course of troop service, the M113 series in the Bundeswehr was also increased several times in combat value and subjected to service life extensions.
