In order to be able to guarantee effective camouflage for vehicles and equipment even when deployed in deserts and steppes, the Bundeswehr introduced camouflage colours from 2003. The range of camouflage colours consists of five shades: light olive (RAL 6040 F9), sandy brown (RAL 8031 F9), sandy beige (RAL 1039 F9). Grey beige (RAL 1040 F9) and camouflage grey (RAL 7050 F9). Depending on the area of deployment, one, two or all three colours of the spotted camouflage paint are normally painted over with camouflage paints; it is also possible to paint the entire vehicle in one camouflage colour. German Armed Forces vehicles in service in Afghanistan have been painted with different versions of camouflage paints, one can find camouflage paints with up to five colours. This publication is the first to illustrate the Bundeswehr's new "desert camouflage" using colour samples and numerous comparative large-format photographs.
