When the Allied partner Italy had changed sides after the first great successes of the Allies, the German troops in Italy at the beginning of September 1943 were faced with the difficult task of, on the one hand, disarming the apostate Ally and, on the other, delivering a hard and loss-laden defensive fight to the landed British and Americans.
The author traces how the two Allied armies conquered the Italian boot frontally from south to north in a struggle that lasted two years.
