Heldburg Castle is picturesquely and impressively situated atop a volcanic cone approximately 403 meters high, overlooking the town of the same name. Two prominent round towers stand out, but the Renaissance wing, the French Building, dating from 1561-1564, is particularly striking. As the only surviving new construction by the princely architect Nikolaus Gromann, it deserves supra-regional attention. Today, the castle houses the German Castle Museum, opened in 2016, the only supra-regional museum in Central Europe dedicated to the significance and cultural history of castle construction.
