The discovery of a drawing from 1550 depicting Monfalcone as a Venetian fortress opens up the possibility of researching historical events between the 15th and 17th centuries in a region that, as the northernmost point of the Mediterranean, is still of great interest today. The volume not only describes the areas between Isonzo, Timavo, Karst and Litorale, where the armies of the Republic of Venice and the Empire, driven by the introduction of artillery units, had to rethink and redefine their military strategy, but also highlights the transformations of the towns and villages that had represented the Patriarchate of Aquileia in previous centuries. The protagonists of this transformation, which significantly shaped the Renaissance on Lake Timavo and in the north-east of the Italian peninsula, were the medieval cities, which took on new forms from 1420 onwards and created territorial structures that still characterise the landscape today.
