Due to its location on the Rhine, Kehl has always been an important place for fortress builders. After the Franco-Prussian War, Kehl was fortified together with Strasbourg to prevent it from being destroyed again. A ring of so-called Biehler unit forts was created, which were built in a standardised way in order to save costs and to be able to build quickly. The book explores the question of what remains today of the former imperial fortifications.

It illuminates the chequered history of the Kehl fortifications from 1871 to the present day and covers the period of construction, the French occupation and the removal from the 1920s onwards.
