Chaberton:
"the fort of clouds", "the highest and mightiest fort in the world". There is no shortage of superlatives to describe Fort Chaberton, which was built by the Italian army in the Alps at the end of the 19th century.
It was built by the Italian army in the Alps at the end of the 19th century. In Italy, people were proud of the feat represented by the construction of the fort, while on the French side it was feared as it posed a major threat to the border and the Briançonnais.
Although the fort is now on French soil and was added to the inventory of historical monuments in February 2021, little is known about the history of its construction, its intended objectives and the battles that led to its neutralisation. Based on archive material and numerous testimonies, this book tells the story of this fort from its construction to its disarmament after 1945, but also all the studies carried out on the French side to achieve the fort's destruction.
120 previously unpublished photos provide a detailed insight into the events.
