Description
Mainz is the Golden City on the Rhine. It was a metropolis on the Roman frontier and the residence of the highest-ranking elector when the German king was elected. For almost 2000 years, a city wall, massive bastions and mighty forts protected this city. Only very few other cities in Germany and Europe can boast such a long history of fortification. Time and again, the fortifications in Mainz and Kastel were rebuilt or extended. Many political and technical developments were immediately reflected there, influencing not only the development of the city but also the lives of the population. A look at the fortress therefore brings Mainz's eventful history back to life and is at the same time a key to understanding today's city.
With 326 illustrations, including 36 exclusive paintings and drawings with reconstructions of historical Mainz and Kastel buildings, 15 newly designed maps showing developments in the city's fortifications over 2000 years, 28 current aerial photographs with a comparative view of then and now. From the table of contents: 1. Roman Mainz; 2. Mainz in the Middle Ages; 3. Mainz in the Baroque period; 4. Mainz in the French period and in the German Confederation; 5. Mainz in the German Empire; 6. The end of the fortress of Mainz.
