A visual guide to U.S. naval pistols of the 19th century. This work offers an illustrated history spanning 100 years of handguns issued to U.S. Navy personnel. It features 70 different pistolsaccompanied by more than 250 color imagescovering the period from 1797 to 1895. The early years are characterized by flintlock boarding pistols and their subsequent conversion to percussion ignition. This is followed by the brief era of percussion muzzle-loading pistols, as well as the transition to percussion revolversoccurring just prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War. Following the war, these revolvers were modified to accept cartridges before finally giving way to purpose-built cartridge revolvers. This period is marked by significant technological advancements and several major conflicts, including the Quasi-War with France, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and the American Civil War.
