On 12 January 1945, the Red Army began its long-awaited major offensive against the Nazi German Reich. Although there was no hope of victory for a long time and they were vastly outnumbered, the Wehrmacht resisted doggedly in many places. The battle for the capital Berlin lasted a good two weeks. On 2 May, soldiers of the Red Army finally hoisted the Soviet flag over the Reichstag. As if in a burning glass, these last months once again concentrated the enormous destructive power of the war launched by Adolf Hitler.
