Factual novel about the fighting in the Dolomites during World War 1. Content: With Italy's declaration of war against Austria in 1915, the Alps become a war zone. The Austrian mountain guide Dimai and his Italian friend Franchini thus become enemies overnight. Without knowing about each other, they fight each other on the Dolomite front near Cortina. The Italian company under Franchini works its way under the Austrians' summit position by means of a tunnel in order to blow it up with seventy tons of explosives. Dimai and his comrades on the summit are not unaware of the Italians' tunnel work, but can do nothing about it. Their situation seems hopeless, for the position must be held "at all costs"...

Luis Trenker, who himself fought on the mountain front, describes in his novel the conditions of positional warfare in rock and ice, where the soldiers were exposed not only to the enemy but also to alpine dangers. In his narrative he incorporated the actual events of the mine warfare at Lagazuoi. The novel was filmed in 1931 with Luis Trenker as director and leading actor and was an international success at the time. Illustrated new edition!
