The "Haruna" was the third ship of the "Kongo" class of battlecruisers and the first of the main battlecruisers to be built by a private company, the "Kobe Kawasaki" shipyard (now "Kawasaki Heavy Industries"). It was the first ship in the world to be equipped with 36cm guns, which were larger than the 34cm guns that were standard in the British Navy at the time. After its completion, it underwent a series of refits and was reclassified as a battleship along with its sister ships in 1931. During the second refit, which began in 1933, not only were the engines replaced, but the guns were also improved and the anti-aircraft and aircraft armament strengthened. The "Kongo" class battleships were built by Vickers in the United Kingdom, the "Hiei" by the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal and the "Kirishima" by Mitsubishi's Nagasaki shipyard. The four battleships of the "Kongo" class were the most active battleship class in the Pacific War. This fifth volume in the "Super Illustration" series is a collection of illustrations created by Yoshiyuki Okamoto, who drew them using research and analyses based on a large number of documents and photographs.
