The Pilot Engineer Service (FID) was the largest structural element of the GDR's aviation forces. Thousands of professional soldiers, temporary non-commissioned officers (three years) and civilian employees performed their responsible and often not very easy service here. This book describes the historical development of the FID, its structures and its complex tasks over a period of more than four decades, while constantly striving for a high level of flight safety.
