Berlin-Brandenburg is one of, if not the most historic aviation region in the world. Hardly any other region has witnessed as many inventions, top achievements, records and historic events as well as concentrations of aviation sites. In the immediate vicinity of the new BER airport, human flight began with Otto Lilienthal, German powered flight with Hans Grade, as well as German aircraft construction and significant parts of aviation research. Even the flight into space had its origins here. The aviation sites experienced take-offs, flights of fancy in innovations and achievements, but also crashes and total losses after the hot and cold wars, as well as new beginnings again and again with the enthusiasm and drive of the people. The authors of the Society for the Preservation of Sites of German Aviation History have taken on the task of documenting this history in order to preserve it, but also to sharpen the reader's senses for the future.

Considered from the beginnings to the present are the aviation sites: Adlershof, Berlin, Biesdorf, Bork, Brand-Briesen, Brandenburg/Havel, Cottbus, Diepensee, Döberitz, Eichwalde, Finow, Friedersdorf, Fürstenwalde, Gatow, Johannisthal, Jüterbog, Heiligensee, Hennigsdorf, Karlshorst, Lichterfelde, Lindenberg, Neuhardenberg, Neuruppin, Potsdam, Rahnsdorf, Rangsdorf, Saarmund, Schönefeld, Schönhagen, Schönwalde, Siemensstadt, Staaken, Stölln/Rhinow, Strausberg, Tegel, Teltow, Werneuchen, Wildau, Wildpark/Werder and Zeesen. Also listed are the sites of aircraft engine construction at Argus (Reinickendorf), BMW (Spandau, Basdorf, Zühlsdorf), Mercedes-Benz (Marienfelde, Genshagen), MTU/IWL (Ludwigsfelde), Rolls Royce (Dahlewitz) and the rocket sites at Kummersdorf, Neuhardenberg and Tegel.
