Hitler took power in Germany in 1933 and quickly repudiated the Treaty of Versailles, including restrictions on the construction of fortifications. This marked the beginning of a major fortification building programme on the Reich's borders to the east and south. From 1935 onwards, various types of modern fortifications were planned and by 1937, 26 fortified lines against France, Czechoslovakia and Poland had been built, covering a distance of over 3,500 km.
