In this two-volume memoir, German soldier and officer Karl Knoblauch recounts his military career during the Second World War based on his war diaries. In the first volume, he describes the years leading up to the outbreak of war until 1944. In 1938, shortly before the outbreak of war, 17-year-old Karl Knoblauch volunteered for military service and began his career as an infantryman before transferring to the Luftwaffe. Knoblauch was later seriously wounded during a Russian fighter plane attack over Vyazma and had to leave his squadron. After his recovery, he returned to the front as an officer in the Hermann Göring division, where this first volume ends. Knoblauch describes his experiences in a sober and detailed manner, creating a gripping and comprehensive first-hand account of his time as a soldier in the Wehrmacht.
