Volume 4 of the series "Les Cahiers de la Compagnie d'Elite" deals with the service of Italian contingents in the ranks of the French army. The period covered ranges from the first Italian units in the service of France in 1499, through Prince Ludovico Gonzaga's gendarmes and the bands of Piedmont, to the role of Italian-French units in the fighting during the terrible siege of Mantua between 1629 and 1630.
