4 July 1759: "I arrived at Versailles on 1 July and learned that the order for the revue had been given for 4 July. On that day, at 12 noon, the King's entire household was drawn up at the Trou-d'Enfer, in Marly. There were our company of light mounted men, the gensdarmes, the grenadiers on horseback, the two companies of musketeers and the four companies of bodyguards, all in orderly dress and most of them newly dressed. This general review only takes place every four years. The troops were drawn up in a single line, the Life Guards having the right side according to their prerogative, the Musketeers in the centre and the Landsknechts and light horses on the left. As each corps was complete, it was an assembly of nearly three thousand men, among the finest troops in the world."
