This work deals with a hitherto less known side of the history of the mountain fortress of Königstein in Saxon Switzerland. The reader is introduced to the development of the fortress artillery, from its beginnings at the end of the 16th century to the period after the First World War. Based on an extensive study of the relevant archives, a comprehensive account of the artillery of Königstein Fortress is given.
In doing so, the reader receives information not only about the gun material, but also about the fortification buildings, the structures of the artillery crew and about the life and everyday service of the soldiers at Königstein Fortress. The special features of a high-altitude fortress are described in detail. Descriptions of the operations of the fortress artillery, embedded in Saxon military history, complete the picture. The work is supplemented by numerous tables, maps and an extensive picture section.
