Fortresses and fortified buildings can be classified according to their topographical position into high and lowland castles. It is obvious that both the elevation and the lowland location made specific demands on the structural design and the equipment of the respective fortification. This collection of essays focuses on mountain fortresses in Europe, including fortifications of mountain passes, i.e. pass fortresses.
The focus is on the various specifics of such high-altitude fortresses across all epochs of fortification history since the early modern period. The geographical scope ranges from the Baltic Sea to South Tyrol, the French Northern Alps and Greece. One focus is on mountain and pass fortresses in Tyrol. Starting with the fortress of Kufstein in South Tyrol, the 14th volume of the series "Fortress Research" deals with the phenomenon of mountain and pass fortresses in Europe. The scope of the analysis ranges from the results of architectural-historical investigations to questions of the touristic valorisation of this very special type of fortress.
