During the Algerian war, paratroopers were at the forefront of the fight. They confronted the most stubborn mujahideen in the most remote djebeles. But does anyone remember today, almost six decades later, that some of these elite units had a majority of "appelés du contingent" in their ranks? This was the case with the 14th Parachute Regiment. This book allows the reader to relive the last months of these soldiers on African soil from September 1959 to April 1961.
This period coincided with the presence of Lieutenant Colonel Pierre Lecomte, who was the last commander and was called "Le Renard Argenté" (The Silver Fox) by his men. In addition to their daily routine, which consisted of exhausting marches and sometimes deadly battles from Kabylia to the Aurès, the author explains how level-headed, balanced and disciplined men came to participate in the generals' coup in Algiers in April 1961. He also shows how the draftees, the cadres, officers and non-commissioned officers, welded together by esprit de corps, experienced the last months of the French presence in Algeria.
