As a paratrooper at the focal points of the front and conqueror of the famous fort Eben Emael. Born on 14 August 1916 in Röhlinghausen Westphalia, Rudolf Witzig joined the Pioneer Battalion 16 as an officer candidate on 1 April 1935 and was promoted to lieutenant. As platoon leader, he took over the pioneer platoon of the parachute infantry battalion in August 1938, with which he took part in the Polish campaign. Commanded with his engineer platoon to the "Sturmabteilung Koch", Witzig landed with 55 parachute engineers on the plateau of the Eben Emael fort in Belgium at dawn on 10 May 1940 and took the fortress in a hand coup. After this action he was awarded the Knight's Cross and promoted to Captain, but was severely wounded while parachuting over Crete. After his recovery, he took part in the battles in Tunisia and Russia as a battalion commander. He experienced the end of the war as a major in the West.
