When it was published in 1889, this modest brochure, as its anonymous author himself said, aimed to summarise the main features of the history of changes in the French army since the Revolution. At that time, there were already numerous military works on this subject, most of which were quite extensive, sometimes complex and often very rare. Based on military history courses for officers, this Précis historique sur l'organisation des armées françaises provided a summarised and simplified study based on the topics covered in its admission programme for the École supérieure de guerre. Since the pages of the Précis that describe the various European armies in detail after the war of 1870 are now outdated, the creators of this work have decided to retain only the essentials, namely the beginnings of the national army based on the divisional principle and its organisation into army corps. This summary section, in which the original form of the quotations has been restored, will, it is hoped, be very useful for understanding the organisation of the French army and the course of the wars during the French Revolution and the First Empire.
