The Tableaux des armées francaises pendant les guerres de la Révolution are the result of patient work carried out between 1845 and 1847 in the historical archives of the French War Ministry. They show, year by year, the various armies that were formed, giving their dates of creation and dissolution, and sometimes their partial or complete amalgamation with other armies, etc. Squadron Commander Clerget also provides a complete list of commanders-in-chief with the dates of their appointment and entry into office, both for incumbents and for deputy or provisional commanders-in-chief. In addition, the territories, departments and arrondissements assigned to each of these armies are indicated, and their very frequent changes are listed for each year. The work of Commander Clerget, to which we have added the list of 147 general officers mentioned with their dates of appointment as brigadier general and major general, is an indispensable resource for enthusiasts, researchers, amateurs and curious minds interested in the military history of the French Revolution and its generals.
