Description
This is the definitive collection of French correspondence for the Waterloo campaign. Thousands of pages of transcriptions - with many hundreds representing new material seen within these pages for the first time. It is the most important resource for French Operations in 1815 ever published. The correspondence presented here in chronological order is reproduced only in French. Only introductory texts and some notes on the sources are in English, except for vol. 5 ("The Analysis"), which is written entirely in English. Bd. 1: The Registries (510 pages); Bd. 2: The Organization May 9 - June 4 (pages); Bd. 3: The Concentration June 5 - June 11 (663 pages); Bd. 4: The Invasion June 12 - June 17 (470 pages); Bd. 5: The Analysis (399 pages).
Content of the single volumes: Vol. 1: An order canvas from the notes of Stoffel for his unpublished Waterloo book; Bertrand's personal registry of correspondence and orders dictated by Napoleon; Soult's Registre de Correspondance and "Rapports à l'Empereur", a newly discovered source; Soult's "Mouvement des Troupes", a newly discovered source; Soult's "Registre du major-général", the copy Grouchy provided long after the events; d'Erlon's registry of correspondence for 1815 along with a campaign diary, a newly discovered source; Reille's registry of correspondence for 1815, as found in the archives; Vol. 2: Includes military correspondence from May 9, the day Soult was appointed major-général, through June 4, the day before the first major concentration maneuvers to the frontier were ordered; Vol. 3: Contains the daily correspondence starting with June 5, the day the first major movements to the frontier were ordered, and June 12, the day before Soult began implementing the final dispositions; Bd. 4: Contains the daily correspondence starting with June 12, the day Soult implemented the final concentration orders, through June 17, the day before the climatic battle of Waterloo; Vol. 5: "The Analysis" explores numerous topics, answers many questions, and corrects major errors of the conventional history.
