As a precaution, Italy did not enter World War 2 until France was almost defeated. Afterwards, various Mussolini war adventures in Greece and North Africa required Germany's help as a "fire brigade" and thus entangled the Reich in unimportant theatres of war. From 1943 onwards, the Axis finally proved to be a fiasco: Mussolini was overthrown by the Italian king and his own fascist Grand Council, and the Reich now had to carry the defensive fight against the Allied invasion of Italy virtually alone.
