No higher commander was deployed in as many ways as Field Marshal Kesselring, who commanded air fleets and army groups during the war. At the outbreak of war in 1939, he commanded Luftflotte 1; in the Western campaign, he headed Luftflotte 2 and was promoted to Field Marshal General on 19 July 1940. With the beginning of the Russian campaign, he led the air operations in support of Army Group Centre. Commanded to Italy and Sicily at the end of November 1941, Kesselring commanded the entire Mediterranean region as Commander-in-Chief South. After the end of the war, Kesselring wandered through prisons and courtrooms for alleged war crimes.
