Kesselring, born in Posen in 1882, wrote his memoirs after his release from prison in 1952. Influenced by his service in the Royal Bavarian Army, he rose quickly in the Wehrmacht. In his memoirs, he describes the motives for his decisions and actions. This historical source conveys to the reader that he tried to act as a soldier in all situations.
Already in 1937, Albert Kesselring became General der Flieger, in 1939 Commander of Luftflotte 1, with which he took part in the Polish campaign, and in 1940 Commander of Luftflotte 2, which he commanded in the Western campaign and also in the East until December 1941. Afterwards, as Commander-in-Chief South, he led the German air forces in the Mediterranean and North Africa. In March 1945, Hitler appointed him Commander-in-Chief West. In his memoirs, Kesselring describes the motivations behind his military decisions and actions.
