After the beginning of the Russian campaign on 22 June 1941, volunteers volunteered all over Northern and Western Europe to support the fight of the German Wehrmacht against the Red Army. The Norwegian Volunteer Legion was founded in German-occupied Norway on 29 June 1941. After intensive training in Germany, the Legion was transferred to Army Group North at the front near Leningrad and took part in the fierce fighting at the encirclement ring around the Neva metropolis. A year later, in March 1943, the Legion left the battlefield and was disbanded.
The men who wanted to continue serving joined the 11th SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division "Nordland". The book shows photos of the Norwegian unit during recruitment, training as well as during front-line action. The Norwegians are seen in bunkers and positions, at forward posts, patrolling on skis and in fierce trench warfare.
