When the Soviet Union developed covetousness in the Baltic States and towards Finland in the late 1930s, this led to the Finnish-Russian Winter War of 1939/40 and the revival of the German-Finnish brotherhood of arms. In the tradition of the "Royal Prussian Hunter Battalion 27" trained in Germany during the First World War, which consisted of Finnish volunteers, the III (Finnish) Battalion was formed in the regiment "Nordland" in the 5th SS Panzergrenadier Division "Wiking".
After their first test at the Mius, the march to the Caucasus followed in 1942. When a second Stalingrad threatened, the Finns were in dogged defensive combat in the winter wasteland of the Kalmyk steppe. Rostov, Kharkov and Dnipropetrovsk were further stations on the battalion's path. When the battalion was sent off to Finland in 1943, General Steiner attested the battalion the highest operational readiness and special stamina.
