In 1223, St. Francis celebrated Christmas with his friars in the forest of Assisi, setting up a cot and placing a live ox and donkey in it. This is thought to have started the tradition of nativity scenes. The designers of cultural-historical tin figures also turned to this theme again and again over the last two centuries. A large number of figurines and complete nativity scenes have been produced by official and private publishers. This richly illustrated volume deals with their history and their creators and, above all, presents them in many splendid pictures.
