Life and Reformation History in Tin Figure Dioramas. A contribution to the Luther Decade for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
In October 2012, a touring exhibition by the Halberstadt Municipal Museum and the Arnfried Müller Pewter Figurine Workshop was shown for the first time in Halberstadt Cathedral as part of the Luther Decade. This exhibition will be shown in numerous museums in the coming years. This booklet shows the dioramas created for this exhibition by Arnfried Müller and Peter Scheuch. The scenes illustrate the life of Martin Luther and provide an insight into his time.
From the accompanying text:
"In 2007, at the beginning of the Luther Decade, I had the idea of depicting the life and work of Martin Luther in dioramas, since Luther's personality and his significance in the history of Germany are of interest to me.
First, research was undertaken to find out which pewter figures already existed on the subject. Apart from eight series, several scenes on the circumstances of the time and a few individual figures, nothing was available. This meant having several series engraved by Werner Otto and putting together further dioramas with matching figures from the collection - an elaborate and costly task.
But it was beyond my strength to create a perfect exhibition with these dioramas alone.
In 2008, the director of the Halberstadt Municipal Museum, Mr Armin Schulze, showed interest in this project and has since been actively involved in its realisation. He won over the art historian Anja Preiss for the texts and the graphic artist Lutz Döring for the overall design. It is thanks to Armin Schulze that it has become an exhibition with this format.
Another lucky circumstance was the acquaintance with the talented diorama builder Peter Scheuch from Gonna, who took over the design of twelve dioramas and put "the finishing touches" to further dioramas."
