Sitting Bull was a Hunkpapa Lakota leader who led his people during years of resistance to United States government policies. He was killed by Indian agency police on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation during an attempt to arrest him, at a time when authorities feared that he would join the Ghost Dance movement. Sitting Bull -Tatanka-Iyotanka- (English for "Sitting Bull", "Sitting Bull") ; * c. 1831 at Grand River, South Dakota; 15 December 1890 at his camp on the Grand River on the Standing Rock Reservation, North Dakota) was a tribal chief and medicine man of the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux. Sitting Bull was an important leader of the Sioux Indians and forced their resistance at the end of the 19th century against the land grabbing of American settlers and their military support. He was a medicine man and also one of the most powerful war chiefs of the Sioux. In the latter capacity he became world famous, especially for his actions at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876.
