"The Ranger" by Karl May is an adaptation of 1850 published novel Le Coureur de Bois of the French travel writer Gabriel Ferry.
Rangers (French coureur des bois or coureur de bois) are the names given to fur traders in North America at the beginning of colonial history. Unlike the large trading companies with their agents and branches, they went out into the country on their own, lived with the Indians, hunted with them and traded their furs. The beginnings of the fur trade date back to the French Compagnie de la Nouvelle France of 1627 and its predecessors, so the language and customs of the early fur trappers were French influenced. - Wikipedia -
