From around 1720, the spread of the mustangs - starting with the Comanches - led to a significant cultural change among the inhabitants of the prairies and the colonisation of the great plains. By 1800, there were approximately two million wild horses on the prairies of North America. These Indians tried in every conceivable way to acquire horses, which gave them considerable advantages in bison hunting and on war campaigns.
