The public torture of captured enemies at the stake was a traditional ritual. The torture stake was a pole used by some Native American tribes in the northeastern United States to tie captured enemies of the tribe, who were then subjected to a humiliating to fatal ordeal.
The procedure was not necessarily fatal; the aim was to break the will of the captive. The victim, on the other hand, often also mocked his tormentors and appeared as unimpressed as possible by the torment.
