During the Thirty-Years-Wars 1618-48 the soldiers tortured, murdered, raped, looted, branded whole cities and communities a thousand times. Some of them were condemned to death by their officers, in most cases for dersertion, for killing a soldier or disobeying orders. A method to spare the life of a paid and already trained mercenary, was to let them gamble with dice on a drum and to execute only the looser. The color photo shows a collector's variant.
