Joachim Kuhn, now practically forgotten, procures the explosives with which the men of 20 July unsuccessfully attempt to blow up Hitler. In 1943, he is a key figure in the Tresckow-Stauffenberg conspiracy. After the failed assassination attempt, he is taken prisoner by the Soviets on the Eastern Front. He spent the next eleven years in prison. When he was deported to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1956, he was a broken man. His requests for compensation were rejected by the German authorities. He spent the last years of his life lonely and ill in cramped conditions. Peter Hoffmann has reconstructed the moving story of the man who fell victim to two dictatorships and created a memorial to this forgotten hero.
