Were the Germans after 1933 a nation of jubilers and yes-men? The majority of Germans were seized after 1933 by an intoxicating national spirit of optimism and joined the new rulers surprisingly quickly, according to the conventional judgment of the Nazi dictatorship. It persists and continues to shape our perception of the seizure of power and its consequences. But this image is false, as Peter Longerich, one of the most renowned historians of National Socialism and the author of numerous bestsellers, shows in this book. On the basis of many thousands of contemporary reports from various departments of the Nazi dictatorship and those of socialist exile, which have not yet been evaluated in their entirety, Longerich presents the first comprehensive account of the mood of the people in the Third Reich. It shows that dissatisfaction with the regime among the population was much greater than previously assumed. It was widespread in all sections of the population, from farmers to laborers to the middle classes the people's community thus proves above all to be a myth of Nazi propaganda. An eye-opening book that will change our view of the foundations and the nature of the Nazi regime.
