The book describes in detail the British and Italian aircraft used by the US Navy and US Marine Corps in the European theatre of war, as US air units lacked aircraft from the United States. American pilots also served in British and Italian squadrons to gain flying and combat experience and to replenish British and Italian units. The British and Italians had aircraft, but not enough trained pilots, so they were happy to welcome the Americans.
