The 1st Pursuit Group was the first American fighter unit to see action in World War I. Entering combat in March 1918, its four squadrons were the only units to use Nieuport 28s in combat, available because no one else wanted them. In July the group went into the big leagues over Château-Thierry, initially suffering heavy losses to the elite German units. Re-equipped with the Spad 13 as they became available during July, the group fought with distinction over St. Mihiel and the Argonne. In mid-October the group added a Sopwith Camel-equipped night fighter squadron, the 185th, to its final weeks of action.
