Manfred von Richthofen, the ace of aces of the First World War, who later became known as the Red Baron, suffered a head injury on 6 July 1917 that put him out of action for several months. Little was known about his life during his recovery - until now. This work presents previously unpublished accounts by the nurse who cared for Richthofen and the artist who drew him and the pilots of his unit during his recovery. Both provide contemporary, detailed and personal accounts that offer fascinating insights into Richthofen's personality and his experiences at the time, without being influenced by propaganda or romanticisation. They are supplemented by Richthofen's original medical records and over 320 photographs, some of which have never been shown to the public before.
