The Military Airlift Command (MAC) was a US Air Force high command responsible for strategic and tactical airlift, primarily using C-130, C-141 and C-5 transport aircraft. The MAC also carried out presidential and VIP transports. The MAC was divided into two geographically organised "Numbered Air Forces": The 21st Air Force controlled units stationed east of the Mississippi River, including those in Europe, while the 22nd Air Force controlled units stationed in the West, including those in the Pacific. MAC also controlled the Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service and the Air Weather Service. After the failed attempt to free American hostages in Iran as part of Operation Eagle Claw, the USAF's special forces were reorganised. As a result, in 1983 the USAF special forces, which had previously been split between Tactical Air Command, the US Air Force in Europe and the Pacific Air Forces, were combined under the MAC in the newly founded 23rd Air Force. Take a look at the day-to-day operations of the MAC in the 1980s.
